The design was good for its time, but increasing train sizes over the 1840s saw the 4-2-0s either replaced with 4-4-0s or rebuilt as 4-4-0s. The Norris 4-2-0 design established the rough pattern of American locomotives, with a horizontal boiler, external steam chests and internal bar frames.
